Awkward. Dr. Seuss and his wife were really liberal and pro-choice. They’ve even threatened to sue pro-life organizations for using this quote the wrong way (the way you’re doing it actually). I guess you didn’t already know that Horton Hears a Who is about the American occupation of Japan post-WWII. He even dedicated it to his dear Japanese friend.
Mrs. Geisel (Mrs. Seuss) continued donating to Planned Parenthood and advocating for reproductive health and rights after her husband died.

But I don’t think it was meant as a joke?
“Anything? You’ve been gone long enough.”
“No.” “There was one female but.”
“But what?”
“I don’t think she was female.”
That was it. No smart ass comment from Dean. No looks of disgust. Dean looks a bit confused at first but I think he just wasn’t expecting it. You could argue that the wording is problematic but I really don’t think this was done in a joking manner or meant to be used as comic relief, especially when none of the characters treated it as such. It wasn’t made a big deal out of, it was stated matter-of-factly and then the conversation carried on like normal.
